As a former Marine and unreconstructed Reaganite, I have been obligated to follow the career of James Webb, who appears to have left the GOP around the same time I did. The Senator-elect from Virginia wrote a book two years ago ( http://www.amazon.com/Born-Fighting-Scots-Irish-Shaped-America/dp/0767916891 ), which seems to be an oral history of this essay ( http://denbeste.nu/external/Mead01.html ) which I read when it was first published. What Meade describes has always struck me as the default position of the ignorant and fearful, but Webb gives a much more human and sympathetic face to a 50% awful idea. If you want to understand why we are (still) in Iraq, read this book.
